その他重要熟語(慣用表現)
要点整理
これまでの2回では、動詞や形容詞を中心とした熟語を見てきました。今回は、文と文、あるいは語句と語句を結びつける役割を持つ、その他の重要な熟語・慣用表現を整理します。意味の働きごとにグループ分けして覚えると整理しやすくなります。
時を表す表現

because of と because の違い
because of の後ろには名詞(または名詞句)しか置けません。一方、because(前置詞ではなく接続詞)の後ろには「主語+動詞」を含む文が続きます。The flight was delayed because of the heavy snow.(名詞句)と The flight was delayed because it snowed heavily.(文)を比べて、後ろに続く形の違いを意識しましょう。

①「するとすぐに」、③「するために」、④「まるで~であるかのように」は、いずれもこの文脈や、後ろに名詞句が続く形に合いません。

(1) 「~のおかげで」という良い結果につながる理由を表すときは thanks to を使います。
(2) 「~だけでなく…も」は not only A but also B です。ここでは A に English、B に French が入ります。
(3) 「~する限り」という条件を表す表現は as long as です。

次の英文を日本語に訳し、太字にした熟語の意味をそれぞれ答えよ。
We decided to travel to the countryside instead of staying in the city, in order to see the stars away from the city lights. As soon as we arrived, thick clouds covered the sky, so that we could barely see anything on the first night. On the other hand, according to the local guide, the weather usually clears up by early morning, and thanks to her advice, we woke up before sunrise and finally saw an amazing sky full of stars.
