must/have to, should/ought toの用法

must と have to(義務・必要)

I must finish this report by tonight.(私は今夜までにこのレポートを終わらせなければならない。)

Students have to wear a uniform at this school.(この学校では生徒は制服を着なければならない。)

We had to wait for two hours at the airport.(私たちは空港で2時間待たなければならなかった。)

(×)We musted to wait...

must not と don't have to の違い(最重要ポイント)

must not(禁止:~してはいけない)

You must not park your car here.(ここに車を駐車してはいけない。)

don't have to(不要:~する必要はない)

You don't have to come to the meeting if you are busy.(忙しいなら、会議に来る必要はない。)

don't have to ~ ~する必要はない(不要・自由)

should / ought to(当然・助言)

You should see a doctor if the pain continues.(痛みが続くなら、医者に診てもらった方がよい。)

We ought to respect other people's opinions.(私たちは他人の意見を尊重するべきだ。)

The train should arrive at the station in ten minutes.(電車は10分後に駅に到着するはずだ。)

You shouldn't stay up too late before an important exam.(大切な試験の前は夜更かしすべきではない。)

推量の must(~にちがいない)

She has been studying English for ten years. She must be fluent.(彼女は10年間英語を勉強している。

He can't be at home now. I just saw him at the station.(彼が今家にいるはずがない。

Visitors must not make loud noises.(訪問者は大きな音を立ててはいけない。)

I had to go to the dentist yesterday because of a terrible toothache.

If you want to improve your English, you should read more books written in English.

(1) You must not use your smartphone during the exam. / You don't have to bring your own smartphone; we will lend you a calculator.

(2) You must be tired after such a long trip. / You must finish your homework before dinner.

次の会話が自然になるように、空所①~③に must, have to, should, must not, don't have to のうち最も適切なものを、必要な形に変えて入れよ。

A: I heard the company changed its dress code. B: Yes. Employees ( ① ) wear a suit anymore — casual clothes are fine now. But they ( ② ) wear ripped jeans; that's still not allowed. Also, new employees ( ③ ) attend the training session next week — it's not optional.

答え:① don't have to ② must not ③ have to
