群前置詞

要点整理

前置詞の中には、1語ではなく、複数の語が組み合わさって、全体で1つの前置詞のように働くものがあります。これを群前置詞と呼びます。群前置詞の後ろには、通常の前置詞と同じように、必ず名詞相当語句(名詞・代名詞・動名詞など)が続きます。

理由を表す群前置詞:because of, due to, thanks to

because of(〜が理由で、〜のせいで) は、後ろに名詞(相当語句)を続けて理由を表します。

The game was canceled because of the heavy rain. (その試合は大雨のために中止になった。)

due to も「〜が原因で」というほぼ同じ意味で使われます。

The flight was delayed due to bad weather. (その便は悪天候のために遅れた。)

thanks to は「〜のおかげで」という良い結果につながる場合によく使われます(皮肉として悪い結果に使うこともあります)。

Thanks to your advice, I passed the interview. (あなたの助言のおかげで、私は面接に合格した。)

最重要ポイント:because vs. because of

入試で非常によく狙われるのが、because(従属接続詞) と because of(群前置詞) の使い分けです。この2つは日本語訳がどちらも「〜なので」となるため混同しやすいですが、後ろに続く形がまったく異なります。

• because + S + V(節):We stayed home because it was raining hard.(激しく雨が降っていたので、私たちは家にいた。)
• because of + 名詞(相当語句):We stayed home because of the heavy rain.(大雨のために、私たちは家にいた。)

because の後ろには「主語+動詞」を含む節が続くのに対し、because of の後ろには名詞句だけが続きます。( )内に何を入れるか迷ったら、後ろが「主語+動詞」の文なら because、名詞1つだけなら because of、と判断しましょう。

譲歩・対比を表す群前置詞:in spite of, despite

in spite of(〜にもかかわらず) は、後ろに名詞を続けて、それとは逆の内容を主節で述べるときに使います。

In spite of the traffic jam, we arrived on time. (渋滞にもかかわらず、私たちは時間通りに到着した。)

despite も in spite of とほぼ同じ意味で使われますが、despite は1語で完結する前置詞なので、直後に of を付けないことに注意してください(despite of とするのはよくある誤りです)。

Despite the traffic jam, we arrived on time. (渋滞にもかかわらず、私たちは時間通りに到着した。)

これも、意味の似ている従属接続詞 although / though(〜だけれども) との使い分けが重要です。

• although/though + S + V(節):Although the traffic was heavy, we arrived on time.
• in spite of / despite + 名詞:In spite of the heavy traffic, we arrived on time.

(1) 直後に a typhoon という名詞が続いているので、群前置詞の because of が適切です。The trip was postponed because of a typhoon.(台風のために、その旅行は延期された。)

(2) 直後に the room was too hot という「主語+動詞」を含む節が続いているので、従属接続詞の because が適切です。I couldn't sleep well because the room was too hot.(部屋が暑すぎたので、私はよく眠れなかった。)

(3) 直後に his young age という名詞が続いているので、群前置詞の In spite of が適切です。Although の後には節が必要なので、この文脈では使えません。In spite of his young age, he manages his own company.(彼は若いにもかかわらず、自分の会社を経営している。)

上の文は Although(従属接続詞)+ S + V(the exam was very difficult)という節の形です。これを群前置詞を使って書き換えるには、後ろを the difficulty of the exam という名詞句に変え、in spite of または despite を使います。

空所は1語なので、1語で完結する前置詞である Despite が適切です(In spite of は3語になってしまいます)。

Despite the difficulty of the exam, most students passed it. (その試験は難しかったにもかかわらず、ほとんどの生徒がそれに合格した。)

「天気予報によれば」は according to the weather forecast という群前置詞句で表せます。この群前置詞句は文全体を修飾する副詞句なので、文頭に置いてコンマで区切るのが自然です。

「明日は一日中晴れるだろう」は it will be sunny all day tomorrow とします。

According to the weather forecast, it will be sunny all day tomorrow.
